Chief Technology Officer

About You:

Are you excited by the opportunity to guide and grow a startup company’s technology? If so, we can’t wait to hear from you.

We need a React Native superhero. Our whole product is written in this and we want to keep it that way (for the foreseeable future anyways). You have an organized and creative mindset that drives you to find innovative solutions to common problems. You like the idea of working collaboratively with our CEO (me), our engineer, client success manager, and others to deliver an excellent product for our clients.

About Us:

At MilkCrate, a mission-driven B-Corp Certified company, we’ve built a platform that launches customizable white labeled apps for mission driven organizations - nonprofits, cities, companies and more. We are on the forefront of gamifying group behavior change. We need someone who is excited about how games and mobile communication can help humans be better and do better. The next phase of our tech (there’s a live and functioning product) is to help the user by adapting to their needs - learning their habits, their interests, and nudging them or giving them something useful at the right time and place. Have you ever used x.ai to schedule a meeting? We want MilkCrate to be that good at helping you do good.

We are a multi-disciplinary team of designers, engineers, writers, and marketers who collaborate closely with each other to create the most innovative, valuable, and enjoyable way to grow social and environmental impact for large communities. Our startup needs a CTO who can provide technical chops and leadership as we prepare for our Series A and expanding client contracts.

About me (CEO):

I have a vision of what I want the company and product to become and a strategy to reach this vision. This has evolved and continues to grow with each meeting, relationship, and milestone. I spend a great deal of time meeting with clients and their users. After a year of courtship I landed Comcast as our client. Since our 2014 launch, we’ve received invites to the White House to discuss climate change, pitched on the Forbes Under 30 stage, been recognized as Startup of the Year, and even earned praise from the UN Foundation.

Some of the superpowers that you possess include:

  • Eager to figure out how to take user data and funnel it back into a better UX that leads to behavior change

  • Exude passion for business and technology as a force for good in the world

  • Be an integrator and a manager of teammates

  • Care about and understand the business strategy and operational strategy to an extent where you can be a functional participant and contribute outside the technical domain

  • Zoom into the individual details while keeping the overall technology strategy in mind

  • Not only answer the questions but extrapolate: “Yes, and this is how we’d do it.”

  • Avoid being pulled down into the weeds and stay at a high enough level to maintain the strategic level vision, not just by setting a direction, but responding well to shifts in the landscape

  • Clear command about what needs to be done in the future given the variability of that future

The nitty gritty nerd stuff:

  • 5+ years’ software engineering experience

  • To start, half your time will be interfacing with our external tech team and half the time writing code to advance the product. Our goal is to build out a large enough tech team that your role would move away from daily coding and more to visioning and management.

  • Represent the technological agenda in staff meetings and when making hiring decisions

  • Take initiative in thought leadership, innovation and creativity for client and UX of product

  • Track, analyze and monitor technology performance metrics

  • Oversee all system design and changes in system architecture

  • Identify technology trends and evolving social behavior that may support or impede the success of the business.

  • Lead strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of all web-based services.

  • Communicate the company’s technology strategy to investors, management, staff, partners, customers, and stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with a User Experience Designer and potential customers to prepare wireframes or mockups of a prototype of the company’s web application.

  • Establish and supervise the software development process, setting short-term objectives and assessing progress as defined by the selected software development methodology.

  • As a member of the senior management team, establish a customer service and support process, with particular responsibility for web-based services that implement the support function.
